![]() ![]() This idea was that democratic systems operating under the rule of law with free markets and with respect for human rights were universal ideals that will ultimately be applied everywhere. The leaders of China and Russia also share a disdain for the so-called "Washington consensus" established after the end of the Cold War. 2 The two countries have a shared history spanning over a thousand years, with the Ukrainian capital of Kiev as the shared historical center. And though Russia officially acknowledges that Ukraine is an independent state, Russia's dictator Vladimir Putin has publicly stated that Ukraine is not a real country. Both communist China and Taiwan officially agree that they are one nation. On the surface, Russia's attitude toward Ukraine bears many similarities toward China's attitude toward Taiwan. Do so any earlier and China would lose the element of surprise. Once an air assault is underway, China could take its time in amassing the ground and naval forces needed to invade the island. Any Chinese assault on Taiwan would start with missile and air attacks to wear down the island's defenses. While large numbers of Chinese warplanes have continued to harass Taiwan, there have been no reports of troop buildups on the coast or aggregation of amphibious landing craft or other ships needed to invade the island.īut that doesn't mean there isn't any risk of simutaneous action. This is particularly true in the case of China, where a large-scale amphibious assault would be needed to take Taiwan, an assault that may still be beyond the capability of China's growing military. And it is still unknown if either country is willing to take the risk of launching an invasion just now. To be clear, there is no evidence of collusion between Russia and China on these two fronts. For the authoritarian giants, what better time to invade and occupy a renegade territory than when the West is distracted by similar events on the other side of the world? A long-feared assault of Taiwan by communist China could potentially be timed with Russian action against Ukraine. With much of America's focus on the risk of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, a double nightmare is brewing in the Far East. On Sunday, Taiwan reported that 39 Chinese communist aircraft entered its Air Defense and Identification Zone, the largest incursion since a record operation last October. “I think when you look from a season’s perspective, we need to get on top of the issue whatever it was today and come back strong next weekend.”Īsked whether he was concerned by the limited time to fix the problem before next week’s race in Jeddah, Horner said: “Actually I prefer it next weekend, I don’t have to wait two weeks with a hangover of this result. The feared invasion of Ukraine may lead to a similar assault on Taiwan by the Chinese communists.Īs over 100,000 Russian troops mass along the Ukrainian border and drill with their Belarusian allies, more trouble is brewing on the other side of the continent. “I don’t think we had quite the pace of Charles today, but some great racing between Max and Charles. “The positive side for us was we had a very competitive car,” Horner added. ![]() “So we just need to get the cars back, understand get the fuel system apart and understand it. Horner said his team took advantage of that opportunity, “but I think that was a general concern rather than specific to Red Bull. The FIA gave teams extra time to inspect their fuel primer pumps ahead of the race. “Looks like potentially an issue within the fuel system.” “It looks suspiciously like the failures are related to each other,” he added. “But obviously we’ll strip the cars, will get into it, we’ll understand what the issue was.” “It’s something that we haven’t seen previously. Horner confirmed the team had not encountered the problem in testing. “And he’d done the hard work into turn one, he held off Lewis.” “It’s hugely disappointing not only to lose a podium in Max, but then on the last lap lose a podium with Checo as well,” said Horner. Verstappen was running second between the Ferraris and Perez fourth ahead of Lewis Hamilton when the problems struck. “I can’t remember the last time that happened to us but it’s obviously your worst nightmare,” Horner admitted. Given the timing and nature of the failures, Red Bull suspect both cars suffered the same fault. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez dropped out within the final three laps of the race with power unit problems. ![]()
